chesed shebbe yesod 5779
by Tzvi Schnee
Today is thirty-six days, five weeks and one day of the counting of the Omer.
Today is represented by the beginning of the seven atributes within yesod. Yesod may be interpreted as having to do with the foundational truths that are held by an individual. What beliefs constitute the foundation of your identity? Chesed is mercy, kindness and compassion. Where does ahavah (love) resonate for you in your foundation? In terms of your emotions, the ones that you are most accustomed, which ones make up the most of your expression? If love does not permeate your foundation in life, then how could you modify the expression of your beliefs, attitudes and interactions with others? In life, are your goals stable enough to resist outside pressure? Is love a factor in how your foundation is built?
Compassion, a necessary ingredient in life itself, resonates with me as an ideal quality that allow me to connect with others. Initially, I may be resistant, full of preconceptions about others, based on their appearance. Otherwise, a lack of commonality in beliefs with the other, could predispose me to be hesitant about conversing with a person. Yet, compassion for my fellow human being, whose plight is the same as me, should compel me to relent of my recalcitance.
“1:3What profit hath man of all his labour Wherein he laboureth under the sun? 2:14The wise man, his eyes are in his head; But the fool walketh in darkness. And I also perceived that one event happeneth to them all. 12:13The end of the matter, all having been heard: fear G -d, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole man. 12:14For G-d shall bring every work into the judgment concerning every hidden thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.”
