The Fifty Days

The countdown until Rosh HaShannah and Yom Kippur has begun; so, the time of preparation has arrived. There are thirty-nine days left until Rosh HaShannah, and forty-nine days left until Yom Kippur. The time to prepare our souls is now. Traditionally, teshuvah (repentance) in preparation of Rosh HaShannah, begins with the onset of the month of Elul; yet, there is no need to wait to turn our hearts towards H’Shem. As we say during Rosh HaShannah, He is Avinu (Our Father), and Malkeinu (Our King). We are called upon to recognize His sovereignty in our lives.

These preceding days that lead up to the month of Tishrei, are an opportune time to focus on heshbon hanefesh, an accounting of the soul, otherwise referred to as an examination of conscience. To check ourselves, in regard to our conscience, whether or not we need a rectification of our souls, as a result of our transgressions. If, at first, we are not able to find any aveiros (transgressions) in our lives that we have committed, then, we need to continue searching. Thus, we will be better prepared for Rosh HaShannah (the Day of Judgment), and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), when we stand before H’Shem.
