Seasons Change

According to environmental science, the natural world tends towards entropy, so I have heard, from a certain source. Yet, upon challenging this assumption, perhaps, it could be said as well, with equal weight, and regard for the laws of nature, that the world tends towards rebirth. Isn’t this premise evident, as seen within the cycles of nature, according to the seasons?

So, on the one hand, in the autumn and winter, signs of decay (read “change”) are found in the leaves on trees, and dissapearance of flowers. Yet, the spring brings rebirth, as blossoms bring hope anew. The same is true every day in our lives, as is written, “Surely the L-RD’S mercies are not consumed, surely His compassions fail not. They are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22, JPS 1917 Tanach).

Consequently, in regard to the state of the soul, it may be said that like entropy in the natural world, the soul could tend towards nihilism, if left “unchecked.” In other words, unless a person is actively engaged in purpose-directed activity, and meaningful endeavors, conscious of the redeeming value of every moment of life, then, the taint of nihilism could take up permanent residence in the soul. G-d forbid.

G-d calls us beyond the nihilistic allure of the world, to greater heights within the realm of religion, spirituality, and the ethical dimension of our lives. While the world may offer constant diversions that may impede upon a goal-oriented life, the quest for ultimate meaning, along with its consistent enactment in our lives, brings renewal to our souls on a daily basis.
